Signs 'N Such makes custom plastic parts
Mother Lode Internet, the first Internet provider in Tuolumne County, is still a family-owned-and-operated business that plans to keep its focus on the Mother Lode.
Although Dennis and Brenda Dahlin have incorporated the business, they remain the only stockholders.
SIGNS 'N SUCH owner Eldon Henry (left) and employee Sharon Nickely work on signs for county fire stations.
The 'Such' in Signs 'N Such has taken up at least 40 percent of the business' time during the past year.
In addition to all kinds of signs, the company makes custom plastic parts for manufacturers and other businesses.
Among the materials owner Eldon Henry works with are polypropylene, Lexan polycarbonite, plexiglass, extruded plastics, pvc plastics and acrylics.
Signs still make up the majority of the company's business, however.
Signs 'N Such has been meeting the needs of Tuolumne County for five years, and it's easier to say what types of signs you can't get there than what you can get.
The only kind of sign they don't make is neon tube -- and they can get that taken care of for customers, too.
Everything else is made to order on the premises. They even do heat transfers, so customers can get custom designed garments, decals or signs along with everything else offered at the shop.
Lexan polycarbonite, one of the materials used for signs and custom parts, is a durable, flexible plastic often used in race car windshields, helicopter bubbles and police vests. The material looks like glass, but is so strong, said Henry, that two 3/8-inch pieces laminated together can withstand a bullet fired from a .38-caliber handgun.
The most common household use of polycarbonite is for break-resistant windows. Although, Henry said, one customer had two small pieces of the diverse material cut to put in his birdhouse so when the birds pecked at it, it wouldn't crack.
Henry has been making routed signs for many years, and has changed with the times, expanding into a computerized system to provide a wider variety and more customized service.
That and his use of the new plastic materials led to his filling a need for custom plastic parts.
"People travel all over to get parts made," he said, "until they find out somebody right here can do it."
Everything is done on the premises, including graphic designs. Other services include lettering and pin-striping on vehicles and banners for such things as birthdays or special occasions.
The company specializes in customizing the message the customer wants to depict on a sign, whether it is for home or business.
At the Home and Garden Show, Henry will have a display of his work. A drawing for a $50 gift certificate will be held each day.
