Middleton's, a complete home decorating and furnishing center, is one of Calaveras County's largest and oldest businesses.

The family-owned business is in Middleton's Mark Twain Center on Highway 49.

The 27,000-square-foot store features large and small appliances, home furnishings, an Ace Hardware store, a Hallmark store and a wide selection of electronic equipment including big-screen television sets.

Middleton's carries a wide selection of major brands, including Amana, General Electric, Hotpoint, Creda and Zenith televisions, Lazy Boy furniture and Simmons and Beautyrest mattresses. They are the largest dealer in the Mother Lode for these brands.

Bob Middleton is the company's corporate president and manager. He took the business over in 1978 from his parents, Hank and Mat Middleton.

The elder Middletons bought Calaveras Mercantile in 1955 at another site. In 1960, they moved the store, then called Middleton's Calaveras Mercantile, to its present location.

Between then and 1966, they continued building, turning the property into a shopping center. Middleton's is the largest business in the center.

The business was incorporated in 1972, and "Calaveras Mercantile" was dropped from the name.

Bob, the youngest of six children, graduated from Sacramento State University.

He and his wife Susan have three children. Nick, 16, Emily, 14, and Toni, 10.

Susan manages the center's Hallmark store.
