Owners can help with building Endeavor homes

Steve Souders of Sonora will demonstrate the Host Dry Chemical Carpet Cleaning Process at the Home and Garden Show.
He will also have a display of 1998 Patriot High Performance Cleaning Machines and lots of information.
He said the Patriot cleaning machines are a high technology replacement for modern day vacuum cleaners.

Endeavor Homes are distributed in this area by Davis Construction of Oakdale.

Owners Gary and Lynn Davis have been working with owner-builders since 1971 and have been licensed contractors since 1975. Gary is also an International Conference of Building Officials certified building inspector.

Their market includes Northern California, southern Oregon and northwestern Nevada.

They not only distribute the homes, but work as consultants and guide owner-builders through such things as the permit process and inspections, staying with them until the job is finished.

They can often be found on their owner-builders' job sites sharing their 25 years of construction experience.

Owners may do all the work themselves or hire subcontractors for part of it. Even if they hire subcontractors to do all the labor, Lynn said, they will save money.

"We usually have about 20 jobs in progress at one time," she said. "That's a good number for us, because we can get out to see everybody."

This is the 11th year they have been distributors of Endeavor Homes.

The 44-year-old company was purchased from Los Plumas Lumber Co. by eight former employees in January 1997. Its main office and complete drafting facility are located in Oroville.

The company has almost 30 standard plans. The Davises work with clients to modify one of the standard plans, or owners may bring in their own custom plan ideas.

The Davises then offer on-site consulting and financing information. They work with banks to help their clients finance projects, including construction loans and land payments through roll-over into permanent loans.

From its Oakdale office, Davis Construction distributes Endeavor Homes all over Northern and Central California.

The Oakdale firm will work with owner-builders on things like the design process, surveying lots for grade and building feasibility, and prequalification for construction and permanent loans.

"This has been a good year," said Lynn, "but our increase in business has been owner-builders rather than turn-key clients (those who want everything done by contractors)."

She attributes the difference to rising material costs, which have people trying to save money by doing more of the work themselves.
